Crochet baby dress - free pattern

This crochet baby dress is written for 4 sizes - from 3 months to 2 years. It's very easy and suitable for a beginner.

Materials required:
  • Sport weight/baby weight/category 2 yarn approximately
    • 255 meters/280 yards for 1-3 months
    • 285 meters/310 yards for 6-12 months
    • 310 meters/340 yards for 12-18 months
    • 340 meters/370 yards for 18-24 months
  • Crochet hook size G/4 mm
  • Button
  • Measuring tape
  • Yarn needle
Abbreviations/Stitches Used:
** - Repeat instructions within asterisks as many times as directed
[ ] - Repeat instructions within parenthesis as a set as many times as directed
st/sts - stitch/stitches
ch - chain
sl st - slip stitch
sc - single crochet (UK - double crochet)
hdc - half double crochet (UK - half treble)
dc - double crochet (UK - treble)
dc2tog - double crochet stitches worked together in 2 consecutive stitches

Finished sizes:
1-3 months (actual chest circumference - 40.5 cm/16 inches)
    Chest circumference of finished dress is 44 cm/17.25 inches and length is 35 cm/13.75 inches
6-12 months (actual chest circumference - 43-45.5 cm/17 to 18 inches)
    Chest circumference of finished dress is 48 cm/19 inches and length is 38 cm/15 inches
12-18 months (actual chest circumference - 45.5-48 cm/18-19 inches)
    Chest circumference of finished dress is 52 cm/20.5 inches and length is 41 cm/16 inches
18-24 months (actual chest circumference - 48-50.5 cm/19-20 inches)
    Chest circumference of finished dress is 56 cm/22 inches and length is 44 cm/17.25 inches

Gauge:
18 dc and 10 rows = approximately 4 inches. Change hook if needed to obtain gauge.

Note:
  • The pattern is written using standard American terms.
  • The pattern is written for the 1-3 month size, increase for rest of the sizes is given within parenthesis, 6-12 months in green, 12-18 months in red and 18-24 months in blue.

Instruction

Upper Part - Front

Row 1: Ch 38 (42/46/50), dc in 4th ch from hook and in rest of chs across. Turn. 36 (40/44/48) sts)

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1st st), dc in rest of the sts across. Turn. 36 (40/44/48) sts

12 to 18 months only

Repeat row 2 one more time.

18 to 24 months only

Repeat row 2 two more times. 

Shaping armhole

Row 1: Sl st in 4 sts, ch 2, dc in next st (together counts as dc2tog), dc in next 26 (30/34/38) sts, dc2tog, Turn. (28/32/36/40) sts.

Row 2: Ch 2, dc in next st (together counts as dc2tog), dc in next 24 (28/32/36) sts, dc2tog, Turn. (26/30/34/38) sts,

Row 3 to 7 (8/9/9): Ch 3 (counts as 1st st), dc in rest of the sts across, Turn. (26/30/34/38) sts,

Shaping neck (side 1)

Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1st st), dc in next 5 (6/8/9) sts, hdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in next st, Turn. (8/9/11/12) sts excluding sl st

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in sc, hdc in hdc, dc in next 6 (7/9/10) sts, Turn. (8/9/11/12) sts

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in next 5 (6/8/9) sts, Cut off yarn. (6/7/9/10) sts

Shaping neck (side 2)

Turn and join yarn at the other end and repeat side 1.

Upper Part - Back

Same as front up to first 8 (9/11/12) rows.

From the next row we’ll be splitting the back into 2 sides.

Side 1

Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1st st), dc in next 12 (14/16/18) sts. Turn. (13/15/17/19) sts. Turn.

Row 2 and 3: Ch 3 (counts as 1st st), dc in next 12 (14/16/18) sts. Turn. (13/15/17/19) sts.

18 to 24 months only

Repeat one more row.

Shaping neck

Row 4: Sl st in 5 (6/6/7) sts, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in the rest of the 6 (7/9/10) sts. Cut off yarn.

Side 2

Join yarn at the other end and repeat side 1.

Joining front and back pieces

Place the back and front pieces one on top of the other with the right sides inside facing each other and seam the first 2 rows at the sides and 7 sts in the shoulders. Pull the right side out.

Join yarn at the top of back neck opening and ch 8 or more depending on the button size, sc in same st (forms a loop) and work sc coming down the side and going up the other side up to the top and cut off yarn. Weave in the ends. 

Sew a button on the opposite side.

Lower Part

Join yarn in any stitch at a joint in row 1 of the upper part.

Round 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), dc in same st, skip next st, **[dc, ch 1, dc] in next st, skip next st** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch.

Round 2: Sl st in next ch-1 space, ch 3, 2 dc in same space, work 3 dc in each ch-1 space around. Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch.

Round 3: Sl st in next st, ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), dc in same st, repeat [dc, ch 1, dc] in the 2nd dc of each 3-dc set. Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch. 

Repeat rounds 2 and 3 until the total length of the dress is about (35/38/41/44) cm from shoulder to hem. 

Ruffle

Row 1: Join yarn at one end of the neck opening at the front and work [ch 3, skip next st, sc in next st] right up to the other end. Turn.

Row 2: Into each ch-3 space work [2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc]. Turn.

Row 3: Sl st in 2 sts, sl st in ch-3 space, into each ch-3 space work [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc    a ]. Cut off yarn. Sew the ends of collar to the shoulder joint on both the sides.

Work sc around the sleeve opening on both sides.  Weave in all the loose ends of yarn.
