Crochet Christmas gnome - free pattern

Materials Needed:

  • Sport weight yarn in red, white and grey
  • 3 mm crochet hook
  • synthetic cotton for stuffing
  • stitch marker
  • yarn needle
  • 12 mm wooden bead
  • Tiny pompom
  • scissors
  • A small piece of cardboard
Size:
Approximately 7 inches high and 4 inches wide

Stitches/abbreviations used:
[ ] - Repeat instructions within parenthesis as a set as many times as directed
ch - chain
st/sts - stitch /stitches
sc2tog - single crochet in 2 consecutive stitches worked together/single crochet decrease

Note:
The pattern is written in standard American terms

Instruction:

Body

Note: Work continuously without joining at the end of each round, so place a stitch marker at the beginning of each round and move it upwards as you progress

Round 1: Using grey make a magic ring, 8 sc into ring.

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (16 sc)

Round 3: [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] around. (24 sc).

Round 4: [sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] around. (32 sc).

Round 5: [sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st] around. (40 sc). 

Take a piece of cardboard and cut it to the size of the base and keep it aside.

Round 6: sc in the back loops of each st around. (40 sc)

Round 7: sc in each st around working into both the loops. (40 sc)

Repeat round 7 thirteen more times.

Round 21: Repeat [sc in 3 sts, sc2tog] around. (32 sts)

Place the cardboard circle inside the body and start stuffing as you progress. Stuff the body tightly but stuff the hat sparingly.

Hat

Round 22: Pull red through the loop, repeat [sc in 14 sts, sc2tog] twice. (30 sts)

Round 23: sc in the back loop of each st around. (30 sts)

Round 24: sc in each st around working into both the loops. (30 sts)

Round 25: [sc2tog, sc in next 13 sts] twice. (28 sts)

Round 26: sc in each st around. (28 sts)

Round 27: [sc2tog, sc in next 12 sts] twice. (26 sts)

Round 28: sc in each st around. (26 sts)

Round 29: [sc2tog, sc in next 11 sts] twice. (24 sts)

Round 30: sc in each st around. (24 sts)

Round 31: [sc2tog, sc in next 10 sts] twice. (22 sts)

Round 32: sc in each st around. (22 sts)

Round 33: [sc2tog, sc in next 9 sts] twice. (20 sts)

Round 34: sc in each st around. (20 sts)

Round 35: sc in 8 sts, sc2tog twice, sc in 8 sts. (18 sts)

Round 36: sc in each st around. (18 sts)

Round 37: sc2tog twice, sc in remaining sts. (16 sts)

Round 38: sc in each st around. (16 sts)

Round 39 to 46: Repeat rounds 37 and 38. You will have 8 sts in the 46th round.

Round 47: sc2tog twice, sc in 4 sts. (6 sts)

Round 48: sc in each st around. (6 sts)

Cut off yarn leaving a long tail and weave in the tail through all the sts and fasten off. 

Brim of the hat

Round 1: Join yarn at the first free front loop stitch of round 23 and repeat [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc.

Round 2 and 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the 1st st. Cut off yarn.


Arms (make 2)

Round 1: Using red make a magic ring and work 6 sc into ring.

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sts)

Round 3: sc2tog 6 times. (6 sts)

Round 4: Pull grey through the loop and work sc in each st around. (6 sts)

Round 5 to 11: sc in each st around. (6 sts).

Cut off yarn leaving a long tail. Flatten the opening and sew it shut.

Finishing

Cut a few strands of white yarn double the length of the body and attach one by one to the sts below the brim of the hat. Trim the sides and the bottom of the beard. 

Sew the wooden beard below the brim of the hat at the center of the beard. Sew arms on other side below the brim of the hat. Attach a tiny pompom at the top of the hat. Weave in all the loose ends of yarn.

  5. I have made 3 different sizes using size 3 crochet hook (small gnome) then Size 4 and then size 5 using dk wool in green for body, red for hat and white for beard. I put plaits on the little one. They look like a little family standing underneath my Christmas tree.
