Fluttering butterflies crochet shawl - free pattern

Today's free pattern is an elegant shawl with an interesting stitch pattern. You can also use this pattern to make baby blankets. It's very easy to remember and would be suitable for a beginner.

Material Used:

Light worsted weight/DK weight/category 3 yarn approximately 700 to 750 meters

G/4 mm crochet hook

Yarn needle

Size:

The shawl measures about 17 inches/44 cm wide after blocking. Length is adjustable. 

Abbreviations/Stitches Used:

** - Repeat instructions within asterisks as many times as directed

[ ] - Repeat instructions within parenthesis as a set as many times as directed

st/sts - stitch/stitches

ch - chain

sc - single crochet (UK - double crochet)

tr - treble (UK - double treble)

Note:

For a custom width, make chains in multiples of 14 + 2. 

Instruction:

Row 1: Ch 72, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in rest of the chs across. (71 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in 3 sts, ch 3, skip next 4 sts, [tr, ch 3, tr] in next st, ch 3, skip 4 sts, **sc in next 5 sts, ch 3, skip 4 sts, [tr, ch 3, tr] in next st, ch 3, skip 4 sts** Repeat from ** to ** across, sc in last 3 sts. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, **3 tr in next ch-3 space, tr in next tr, 3 tr in next ch-3 space, tr in next tr, 3 tr in next ch-3 space, sc in the 3rd sc** Repeat from ** to ** across. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 5 (counts as tr + ch 1), tr in same st, ch 3, skip 3 tr, sc in next 5 tr, ch 3, **skip next 3 tr, [tr, ch 3, tr] in next sc, ch 3, skip 3 tr, sc in 5 tr, ch 3** Repeat from ** to ** across, [tr, ch 1, tr] in last sc. Turn.

Row 5: Ch 4 (counts as tr), tr in ch-1 space, tr in next tr, 3 tr in ch-3 space, sc in the 3rd sc, **3 tr in next ch-3 space, tr in next tr, 3 tr in next ch-3 space, tr in next tr, 3 tr in next ch-3 space, sc in the 3rd sc** Repeat from ** to ** across, 3 tr in the last ch-3 space, tr in tr, tr in ch-1 space, tr in last st. Turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in 3 sts, ch 3, skip next 3 tr, [tr, ch 3, tr] in next sc, ch 3, **skip 3 tr, sc in next 5 sts, ch 3, skip 3 tr, [tr, ch 3, tr] in next sc, ch 3** Repeat from ** to ** across, sc in last 3 sts. Turn.

Repeat rows 3 to 6 until you reach the desired length of the shawl.

Don't forget to block your shawl. Blocking will open up the stitches. You can see for yourself how the shawl looks before and after blocking.

  1. What yarn did you use? Can I use any yarn fiber for this as long as yarn is DK weight?

    1. I used a locally available yarn. You can use any yarn. Depending on the thickness of the yarn your shawl width may vary slightly
