Striped crochet tote - free pattern

Hi, today's free pattern for you is this lovely grey and white striped tote. Absolutely love this bag and it's one of my favourite bag designs for sure. I should admit that the idea is not purely mine, I borrowed it from a bag that I saw in a foreign mag but it had vertical stripes in it.

Instruction

Materials Needed

Medium worsted weight yarn approximately 285 yards in grey and 145 yards in white
Crochet hook size H/5 mm
Stitch markers
Yarn needle
Measuring tape

Size

The finished bag has a width of approximately 16.5 inches and height of 12.5 inches excluding the handles

Gauge

17 sc and 20 rows = approximately 4 inches

Stitches/Abbreviations Used

** - Repeat instructions within asterisks as many times as directed
[ ] - Repeat instructions within parenthesis as a set as many times as directed
ch - chain
st/sts - stitch/stitches
sl st - slip stitch
sc - single crochet (UK - double crochet)
dc - double crochet (UK - treble)

Note: Work rounds 1 to 10 continuously without joining at the end.

Round 1: Using grey, ch 63, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch (place 1st marker here), sc in rest of the chs across except the last (place 2nd marker at the last sc worked) 3 sc in the last ch, sc in next ch on the other side (place a marker here), sc in next 59 ch (place 4th marker in the last sc made), 2 sc in next space (126 sts)

You will have 60 sts from the 1st marker to the 2nd marker, 3 sts between the 2nd and 3rd markers, 60 sts from the 3rd to 4th marker and 3 sc between the 4th and 1st marker 

Round 2: 2 sc in the next st (place a marker at the 1st st to mark the beginning of round), sc in each sc from 1st to 2nd marker, 2 sc in next 3 sc, sc in each sc from marker to marker, 2 sc in next 2 sc (132 sts)

Round 3: 2 sc in the next sc, sc in next sc, sc in each sc from 1st to 2nd marker, [2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc] 3 times, sc in each sc from marker to marker, [2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc] 2 times (138 sts)


You can remove all the markers except the one placed at the beginning of the round.

Round 4 to 11: Sc in each st around (138 sts). Join the last st with a sl st to the 1st st at the end of round 11.

Round 12: Pull white through the loop and work sc in each st around. Join. (138 sts)

Round 13: Ch 3 (counts as 1st st), dc in next st, ch 1, skip next st, **dc in next 2 sts, ch 1, skip next st** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join ch 1 with a sl st to the 1st st.

Round 14: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch-1 space around. Join (138 sts)

Repeat rounds 12 to 14 eight more times alternating grey and white.



Round 39: Pull grey through the loop and sc in each st around (138 sts)

Rounds 40 to 44: Sc in each st around.

Handles 

Place markers 3 inches away from both the ends on both sides.


Rounds 45: Sc in each st until the marker, ch 95, sc in the next marked st on the same side, sc in rest of the sts until the marker on the other side, ch 95, sc in the next marked st, sc in rest of the sts until the beginning of round.

Rounds 46: Sc in each st and each ch around. Join and cut off yarn. Weave in all the loose ends.
