Newborn baby sweater - free pattern

Hi, in this post today I'm sharing with you the pattern for a newborn baby sweater. If you are an experienced crocheter who knows how to work around posts (front post double crochet) then this pattern would be suitable for you.

Materials required:

Light worsted weight/DK weight yarn approximately 415 yards

Crochet hook size H/5 mm

Few buttons

Yarn needle

Finished Size:

Chest circumference = 16.5 inches/42 cm

Length - 8 inches/20 cm

Gauge

16 dc and 9 rows = approximately 4 inches

Abbreviations/Stitches Used:

** - Repeat instructions within asterisks as many times as directed

ch - chain

st/sts - stitch/stitches

sl st - slip stitch

sc - single crochet (UK - double crochet)

dc - double crochet (UK - treble)

fpdc - front post double crochet

dc2tog - double crochet worked together in 2 consecutive stitches (dc decrease)

Note:

The pattern is written in standard American terms

Ch 3 at the beginning of a row is always considered as the 1st st 

Instruction
Body

Row 1: Ch 82, skip 5 ch, dc in 6th ch from hook, ch 1, skip 1 ch before the dc, dc in ch before the skipped ch (forms an X), **skip next 2 ch, dc in the next ch, ch 1, dc in the 1st skipped ch** Repeat from ** to ** across, dc in last ch. Turn. (The 3 ch at the beginning counts as a dc)


Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in each st and sc in each ch-1 space across. Turn. (80 sts)

fpdcX - skip next 2 sts, dc in next st, ch 1, fpdc in the dc below the 1st skipped st

Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as 1st st in all rows), fpdcX 26 times, dc in last st. Turn.


Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch-1 space across. Turn. (80 sts)

Repeat rows 3 and 4 eight more times.

Repeat row 3. Proceed to next section.

Dividing for shoulders and back
Right shoulder

Row 1: Ch 1, work 20 sc across working 1 sc in each st and 1 sc in each ch-1 space. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 3, fpdcX 6 times, dc in last st. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch-1 space across. Turn. (20 sts)

Shaping neck

Row 1: Ch 3, fpdcX 5 times, skip next 2 sts, dc2tog. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch-1 space across. Turn. (17 sts)

Row 3: Ch 3, fdpcX 4 times, skip next 2 sts, dc2tog. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch-1 space across. Turn. (14 sts)

Row 5: Ch 3, fpdcX 3 times, skip next 2 sts, dc2tog. Turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch-1 space across. Turn. (11 sts). Cut off yarn.

Back

With the wrong side facing skip the ch-1 space after the last st of the right shoulder and join yarn in the next st

Row 1: Ch 1, work 38 sc across working 1 sc in each st and 1 sc in each ch-1 space. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 3, fdpcX 12 times, dc in last st. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch-1 space across. Turn. 38 sts

Repeat rows 2 and 3 two more times

Shaping neck

Left

Row 1: Ch 3, fpdcX 3 times, dc2tog. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch-1 space across. Cut off yarn. )11 sts)

Right

Skip the next 14 sts and join yarn in the next st,

Row 1: Ch 2, dc in next st (counts as dc2tog), fpdcX 3 times, dc in last st. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch-1 space across. Turn. (11 sts)

Left shoulder

With the wrong side facing skip the ch-1 space after the last st of the back and join yarn in the next st

Row 1: Ch 1, work 20 sc across, working 1 sc in each st and 1 sc in each ch-1 space. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 3, fdpcX 6 times, dc in last st. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch-1 space across. Turn. (20 sts)

Shaping neck

Row 1: Ch 2, dc in next st (counts as dc2tog), skip next 4 sts, dc in next st, ch 1, fpdc in the dc below, fpdcX 4 times, dc in next st. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch-1 space across. Turn. (17 sts)

Row 3: Ch 2, dc in next st (counts as dc2tog), skip next 4 sts, dc in next st, ch 1, fpdc in the dc below, fpdcX 3 times, dc in next st. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch-1 space across. Turn. (14 sts)

Row 5: Ch 2, dc in next st (counts as dc2tog), skip next 4 sts, dc in next st, ch 1, fpdc in the dc below, fpdcX 2 times, dc in next st. Turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch-1 space across. Turn. (11 sts). Cut off yarn.

Sew shoulder seams

With the wrong side out fold the front panels in and sew the top edges of the shoulders.

Sleeves

Round 1: With the right side out, join yarn at the armhole part of the sleeve opening and ch 1, work 27 sc around the sleeve opening spacing them uniformly (one sc at the armhole part and rest of the sts divided equally between the front and back parts of the sleeve opening). Join with a sl st to the 1st sc.

Round 2:  Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), skip the previous st and dc in the st before the skipped st (forms an X), **skip next 2 sts, dc in the next st, ch 1, dc in the 1st skipped st** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the 3rd st at the beginning of round.

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in each st and sc in each ch-1 space around. Turn. (27 sts

Round 4: Ch 4, skip the previous st, fpdc in the dc below, fpdcX around. Join with a sl st to the 3rd at the beginning of round.

Repeat rounds 3 and 4 eight more times.

Next round: Sl st in ch-1 space, ch 1, 2 sc in same space, 2 sc in each ch-1 space around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc. (18 sts

Last round: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc. Cut off yarn.

Edging

Round 1: Join yarn at the left bottom corner of the front panel, ch 3, work 1 dc in each space and dc in each st moving up to the neck opening, make 3 dc in the corner st, work sc up the neck opening, across the back and down the other side of the neck opening, work 3 dc in the corner st and dc down the side of the right front panel leaving ch-1 spaces for buttonholes at equal distances, work 3 dc at the right lower corner, dc in each space between sts across the lower part and 2 dc at the other corner where you worked ch 3. Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch.  

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st up the left front panel, 3 sc in the corner st, sc in each st around the neck, 3 sc in the next corner st, sc in each st and each ch-1 space down the right front panel, 3 sc in the lower corner st, sc in each st across the lower part of the sweater and 3 sc in corner st.  Join with a sl st to the 1st st. Cut off yarn.  

Finishing

Sew buttons. Weave in all the loose ends.
