Hexagon patchwork Christmas Stocking - free pattern

This is the free pattern that I mentioned in my last post. It took me nearly a whole day to design this. The hexagon motif is a basic pattern, so nothing complicated there, but figuring out where to fit what to get the shape was like solving a giant jigsaw puzzle for me. I almost gave up on it, then finally it clicked. After that it was a breeze.

I used light worsted weight yarn in red which is the main color, green, brown and blue.
Size 3.5 mm crochet hook
Tapestry needle to weave in the hundreds of yarn ends

The stocking measures 13 inches from top to bottom, 10 inches wide at the top and 12 inches wide at the bottom

Abbreviations Used (US terms)
ch - chain
sl st - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet

Note: Ch 3 at the beginning of a round will be counted as a stitch
Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 3 and dc into ring, ch 2, [2 dc, ch 2] 5 times into ring. Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch.
Round 2: Ch 3, dc in next dc, **[dc, ch 2, dc] in ch-2 space, dc in next 2 dc** Repeat from ** to ** around, [dc, ch 2, dc] in last ch-2 space. Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch. Cut off yarn.

You need to make 56 hexagons.

How to join:
First join 8 hexagons in a row. This will be your first row. For the second row join the hexagons one by one to the hexagons in the first row. Work one sc at the corner ch-2 spaces of hexagon in the first row and new hexagon of the second row holding them together, sc in next 4 dc of both the hexagons held together, sc in next ch-2 space, ch 1, sc in same ch-2 space of the 2nd row hexagon and ch-2 space of the next hexagon together, continue until all the hexagons of the 2nd row are joined to the hexagons of the 1st row.
First join the hexagons in the order shown below. Weave in the thousands of loose ends. Phew!
Then join as indicated in the image above matching the letters on the left and right side, i.e., join A on the right side to A on the left side.
To make it easier I first folded it and using stitch marker I marked all the sides that needed to be joined. Then I joined using the same technique as the other hexagons. Finally join at the bottom.

Round 1: Join red to the joint at the left corner, ch 3 (counts as dc), **dc in next ch-2 space, dc in next 2 dc, hdc in next dc, sc in next dc, 2 sc in ch-2 space, sc in next dc, hdc in next dc, dc in 2 dc, dc in next joint** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch.
Round 2 to 5: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join.
Round 6: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. Cut off yarn and weave in the loose ends. Join yarn at the left top corner and make a loop.

Finally my stocking looked as in the 1st image, but I didn't like the pointed heel, so I tucked the hexagon at the corner in and I liked it better as seen in the 2nd image.
Now your stocking is ready to be filled.
