Crochet dragonfly shawl

This pattern is for a beautiful crochet shawl with dragonflies and lovely lace border. It's an easy pattern and suitable for beginners. 

Materials:
Sport weight/category 2/fine yarn about 900 meters/985 yards
H/5 mm crochet hook
Yarn needle

Size:
The finished shawl measures about 72 inches in length and 20 inches wide

Stitches/Abbreviations Used:
** - Repeat instructions within asterisks as many times as directed
[ ] - Repeat instructions within parenthesis as a set as many times as directed
ch - chain
st/sts - stitch/stitches
sl st - slip stitch
dc - double crochet (UK - treble)
tr - treble (UK - double treble) 

Note:

  • The pattern is written in standard American terms
  • For the dragonfly stitch initial chains as made in multiples of 16 + 3

Instruction
Shawl

Row 1: Ch 83, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in rest of chs across. Turn. (81 sts)

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in next 7 sts, ch 2, skip next st, **dc in next 15 sts, ch 2, skip next st** Repeat from ** to ** 3 more times, dc in last 8 sts.

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, **ch 11, skip 5 sts before and after ch-2 space, work dc in the next 5 sts** Repeat from ** to ** across finishing the row with dc in the last 3 sts following 11 chs. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 3, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, ch 4, dc in the ch-2 space one row below, ch 4, 2 dc in next dc, **dc in next 3 dc, 2d dc in next dc, ch 4, dc in the ch-2 space one row below, ch 4, 2 dc in next dc** Repeat from ** to ** across, dc in last 2 sts. Turn.  

Row 5: Ch 3, dc in each dc up to ch-4 space, **4 dc in ch-4 space, ch 1, 4 dc in next ch-4 space, dc in each dc** Repeat from ** to ** across. Turn.

Row 6: Ch 3, dc in each dc up to ch-1 space, **ch 1, dc in each dc up to next ch-1 space** Repeat from ** to ** across. Turn.

Row 7 and 8: Repeat row 6.

Row 9: Ch 3, dc in each dc up to ch-1 space, ch 1, **dc in next 7 dc, ch 2, skip next st, dc in next 7 dc, ch 1** Repeat from ** to ** across, dc in rest of the sts.

Row 10: Ch 3, dc in each dc up to ch-1 space, dc in ch-1 space, **dc in next 2 dc, ch 11, skip next 5 dc and 5 dc after ch-2 space, work dc in next 2 sts, dc in ch-1 space** Repeat from ** to ** across, dc in rest of the sts across. Turn.

Row 11: Ch 3, dc in next 9 dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 4, dc in ch-2 space one row below, ch 4, 2 dc in next dc, **dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 4, dc in the ch-2 space one row below, ch 4, 2 dc in next dc** Repeat from ** to ** across, dc in rest of the sts. Turn. 

Row 12 to 15: Repeat rows 5 to 8.

Row 16: Ch 3, dc in next 7 sts, ch 2, skip next st, **dc in next 7 dc, ch 1, dc in next 7 dc, ch 2, skip next dc** Repeat from ** to ** across, dc in last 8 sts. Turn.

Row 17: Ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, **ch 11, skip next 5 sts and 5 sts after ch-2 space, work dc in the next 2 dc, dc in ch-1 space, dc in next 2 dc** Repeat from ** to ** across finishing the row with dc in the last 3 sts following 11 chs. Turn.

Repeat rows 4 to 17 six or seven more times depending on how long you want the shawl to be. 

Border

Row 1: Ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, **ch 3, skip 3 sts, dc in next 3 sts** Repeat from ** to ** across. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 5, 3 dc in next ch-3 space, **ch 3, 3 dc in next ch-3 space** Repeat from ** to ** across, ch 2, dc in last st. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in ch-2 space, **ch 7, 2 dc in next ch-3 space** Repeat from ** to ** across, dc in last st. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 4 (counts as tr), [4 dc, ch 5, 4 dc] in ch-7 space, **ch 3, dc in next ch-7 space, ch 3, [4 dc, ch 5, 4 dc] in next ch-7 space** Repeat from ** to ** across, tr in last st. Turn.

Row 5: Ch 4 (counts as tr), [4 dc, ch 5, 4 dc] in ch-5 space, **ch 3, dc in next dc, ch 3, [4 dc, ch 5, 4 dc] in next ch-5 space** Repeat from ** to ** across, tr in last st. Turn.

Repeat row 5 five more times. Cut off yarn.

Join yarn in the 1st st on the other side and repeat.
