Easy shell stitch bag

Materials Required:

DK/light worsted weight/category 3 yarn approximately 155 to 160 meters

G/4 mm crochet hook

Button

Yarn needle

Measuring tape

Size:

The bag measures about 8 inches wide and 8.5 inches high excluding the handles 

Stitches/Abbreviations Used:

** - Repeat instructions within asterisks as many times as directed

[ ] - Repeat instruction within parenthesis as a set as many times as directed

ch - chain

st/sts - stitch/stitches

sl st - slip stitch

sc - single crochet 

dc - double crochet

The pattern is written in standard American terms.

Instruction

Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 1 (does not count as a st), 16 dc into ring. Join with a sl st to 1st st. (16 sts)

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 dc in each st around. Join. (32 sts)

Round 3: Ch 1, repeat [dc in next st, 2 dc in next st] around. Join. (48 sts)

Round 4: Ch 1, repeat [2 dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts] around. Join (56 sts)

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same st, skip next st, 3 dc in next st, skip next st, **sc in next st, skip next st, 3 dc in next st, skip next st** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc.

Round 6: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, sc in 2nd dc, **3 dc in next sc, sc in the 2nd dc** Repeat from ** to ** around, dc in the 1st sc at the beginning of round. Join with a sl st to the top of the 3rd ch.

Round 7: Ch 1, sc in same st, 4 dc in next sc, **sc in the 2nd dc, 4 dc in next sc** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc.

Round 8: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, sc in the space between the 2nd and 3rd dc, **4 dc in next sc, sc in the space between the 2nd and 3rd dc** Repeat from ** to ** around, 2 dc in the 1st sc at the beginning of round. Join with a sl st to the top of the 3rd ch.

Round 9: Ch 1, sc in the space between the starting 3 ch and the last st, 4 dc in next sc, **sc in the space between the 2nd and 3rd dc, 4 dc in next sc** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc.

Round 10: Repeat round 8.

Round 11: Ch 1, sc in the space between the starting 3 ch and the last st, 5 dc in next sc, **sc in the space between the 2nd and 3rd dc, 5 dc in next sc** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc.

Round 12: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same st, sc in the 3rd dc, **5 dc in next sc, sc in 3rd dc** Repeat from ** to ** around, 2 dc in the 1st sc at the beginning of round. Join with a sl st to the top of the 3rd ch.

Round 13: Ch 1, sc in same st, 5 dc in next sc, **sc in the 3rd dc, 5 dc in next sc** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc.

Repeat rounds 12 and 13 until the height of the bag is about 7.5 inches


Edging:

Round 1 and 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc. (84 sc)

Round 3: **Ch 5, skip 2 ch, sc in next ch** Repeat from ** to ** around.

Round 4: Sl st in the 1st ch-5 space, ch 1, 3 sc in same space, repeat 3 sc in each ch-5 space around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc. (84 sc)

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc. (84 sc)


Handles:

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in 12 sts, ch 45, skip 18 sts, sc in next 24 sts, ch 45, skip 18 sts, sc in rest of the sts, each st around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc. (84 sc)

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch around. Join.

Round 3: Sl st in each st around. Fasten off. Weave in all the loose ends.


Finishing:

Sew button to the front of the bag. Join yarn to the back of the bag right behind the button and work chains long enough to go around the button. Secure the other end of chains to the next st using a sl st. Fasten off and weave in the ends of yarn.
