Gloriosa daisy square - placemat and coasters

How was your weekend? Summer is here and I spent my weekend crocheting some flower squares using some warm summer colours. This is one of those projects that I start without any idea of what the end product is going to be. I made few squares but I am yet to decide what to do with these. So for now you can enjoy a free pattern to make these beautiful squares.

I used medium worsted weight yarns in maroon, orange and green and a size G/4.00 mm hook. Each square measures about 4 x 4."  Depending upon the yarn and the hook that you use the size of your squares may vary.

Gloriosa daisy squares

Materials:
Medium worsted weight yarns in maroon, orange and green
Size G/4.00 mm crochet hook

Size:
Approximately 4" x 4"

Abbreviations:
ch - chain
st - stitch
sl st - slip stitch
dc- double crochet (UK - treble)
dc2tog - double crochet 2 stitches together
dc4tog - double crochet 4 stitches together
tr - treble (UK - double treble)
ch-sp - chain space

Instruction
(I have written the pattern using American terminology)

Round 1: Using maroon ch 5 and join with a sl st to form a ring. Ch 2, dc into ring (considered first dc2tog), ch 2, (dc2tog, ch 2) 7 times into ring (8 dc2tog). Join with a sl st to the beginning of round. Fasten off.

Round 2: Join yellow into a 2ch-sp, (ch 2, dc3tog, ch 2, dc4tog) into same space, ch 2, (dc4tog, ch 2, dc4tog, ch 2) into each 2ch-sp around. Join.

Round 3: Join green into any 2ch-sp, ch 7, tr in same space

**ch 3, dc in next 2ch-sp, (ch 1, dc in next space) twice,

 ch 3, (tr, ch 3, tr) in next space**

Rep from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the 4th ch at the beginning of round.

Round 4: Ch 3, **(2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) into the corner, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next 2ch-sp, dc in next dc, (dc in next 1ch-sp, dc in next dc) twice, 2 dc in next 2ch-sp, dc in next dc** Rep from ** to ** around. Join. You will have 15 dc on each side of the square.

Your Gloriosa daisy square is ready now.

I joined 4 squares together for the placemats and worked a shell edging. For joining I worked into the back loops of the squares. You can click here for an elaborate tutorial on joining into back loops. I prefer this method of joining because it will make your squares sit comfortably next to each other.

Pattern for the edging

Join 4 squares together for the placemat.

Round 1: Join green into a corner. Ch 8 (considered dc + ch 5), dc in same space, ch 1, skip 1st dc, dc in next dc, (ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next dc) 6 times, ch 1, dc into corner of the square, ch 1, dc into the corner of next square, (ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next dc) 7 times, ch 1, (dc, ch 5, dc) into corner. Repeat on other 3 sides. Join with a sl st into the 3rd ch at the beginning.

Round 2: Sl st into next 5 ch-sp, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 5, 3 dc) into same space. ** skip the next 1ch-sp and sc in next dc, skip next 1ch-sp, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) into next 1ch-sp.** Repeat from ** to ** across, (3 dc, ch 5, 3 dc) into the corner. Repeat in rest of the 3 sides.   

Work similarly for the coasters.
