Crochet mini handbag - free pattern


 

A pretty handbag with a unique design. This bag is made by making some lovely flower squares, joining them together and then working above and below the squares to create this elegant purse. I have made the base separately and attached to the bag. You can make this bag in any size. Make more squares for a bigger bag. 

Materials:
Medium worsted weight yarn in 3 colours
G/4 mm crochet hook
Button
Yarn needle

Stitches/Abbreviations used:
** - Repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed
[ ] - Repeat instructions within parenthesis as a set as many times as directed
st/sts - stitch/stitches
sl st - slip stitch
ch - chain
sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet

Size:
The finished bag is about 20 cm wide and 16 cm high excluding the strap

Instruction:
Square motif
Round 1: Using colour A, make a magic ring, ch 1 and work 8 sc into the ring. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc.
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc. (16 sc)
Round 3: Pull colour B through the loop and tighten the loop, ch 6 (counts as dc + ch 3), dc in same st, **ch 1, skip next st, dc in next st, ch 1, skip next st, [dc, ch 3, dc] in next st** Repeat from ** to ** 2 more times, ch 1, skip next st, dc in next st, ch 1. Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch.
Round 4: Pull color C through the loop, ch 1, sc in same st, **5 sc in next ch-3 space, sc in next dc, dc in sc one row below working behind the ch (this dc will be visible behind the ch-1 space), sc in next dc, dc in sc one row below working behind the ch, sc in next dc** Repeat from ** to ** 2 more times, 5 sc in next ch-3 space, sc in next dc, dc in sc one row below, sc in next dc, dc in sc one row below. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc and fasten off. (40 sts)

Make 6 squares. Join the squares in a row sewing into 9 sts leaving out the corner stitch of each square. Join the last to the first. Weave in all the loose ends.

Lower part

Round 1: Join yarn in corner st of any square, ch 1, sc in each st across. You’ll be working 11 sc in each square. Join the last sc with a sl st to the 1st sc. (66 sc)
Round 2 and 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around. (66 sts)
Round 4 and 5: Join colour B and repeat the round. Cut the yarn off.
Upper part
Same as the lower part working on the other side of the motifs. Work a total of 12 rounds with the last 2 rounds in colour B. Cut off yarn and weave in the loose ends.

Base

Round 1: Ch 30, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across except the last, 3 sc in last ch, sc in next 27 ch on the other side, 2 sc in next ch. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc. (60 sc).

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, sc in next 27 sts, 2 sc in next 3 sts, sc in next 27 sts, 2 sc in next 2 sts. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc. (66 sc). Do not fasten. Continue to join the base.

Align the base to the bottom of the bag and work sl st into the inner loops of both the pieces 

Strap
Make 2 ch, sc in the 2nd ch from hook. Twist the stitch slightly away from you and work sc into the horizontal bar below the V of the st. 


**Again twist slightly away from you and work sc into the 2 horizontal bars below the stitch just completed. You'll insert hook into both the bars and work 1 sc** Repeat until you have reached the desired length. Fasten off and weave in the yarn at both the ends. 


Finishing
Sew both ends of the strap to the corners of the bag. 
Sew a button to the top center of the bag. Join yarn to the back part of the bag just behind the button and make a few chains long enough to go around the button, sl st in the same st where you joined the yarn and fasten off. Weave in all the loose ends of yarn.
