Easy crochet bag - free pattern

 

Materials:

  • Medium worsted weight/category 4 yarn about 1 ball (100 gm) in main colour (MC) and less than half a ball in a complementing colour (CC).
  • G/4 mm crochet hook
  • 4 stitch markers
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Size:

About 10 inches wide and 10.75 inches high not including handles

Stitches/Abbreviations Used:

** - work instructions between asterisks as many times as directed

ch - chain

st/sts - stitch/stitches

sl st - slip stitch

sc - single crochet

dc - double crochet

Note:

  • The bag is worked as a single rectangular piece which is folded in half, sides sewn and edging and handles made.
  • The chains are in multiples of 4 + 3

Instruction:

Work totally 28 rows of boxes (ch-2 spaces) where each row of box consists of 2 rows of stitches. Work first 2 rows of boxes (first 4 rows of sts) in CC (white) and the next 24 rows of boxes in MC (orange) and the last 2 rows of boxes in CC. 

Part 1

Row 1: Ch 51, sc in 2nd and 3rd ch from hook, **ch 2, skip 2 ch, sc in next 2 ch** Repeat from ** to ** across. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1st st), dc in next sc, **ch 2, dc in next 2 sc** Repeat from ** to ** across. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in 2 sts, **ch 2, sc in next 2 dc** Repeat from ** to ** across. Turn.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have 28 rows of boxes/ch-2 spaces. Finish with single crochet row. 

Fold the piece into half and sew both the sides with the wrong side out. After sewing flip the right side out.

 
Part 2

Round 1: Join yarn in any st at a corner, ch 1 and work sc in each st and 2 sc in each ch-2 space around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc. (100 sc).

Marking for handles
You'll have 12 boxes in each row on each side. Count the 4th box from one end. You'll have 2 sc above the box. Place a marker in the st that is away from the edge and towards the center of the bag. Similarly count the 4th box from the other end and place a marker in the st above the space that is towards the center of the bag. You'll have 18 sts between the 2 markers. Repeat on the other side. 
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st up the marker working the last st in the marked st, ch 36, sc in the 2nd marked st and in rest of the sts up to the next marked st, ch 36, sc in the 4th marked st and in rest of the sts. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc.


Round 3: Ch 1, sc in each st and in each ch around. Join. 
Round 4: Sl st in each st up to the handle, repeat [sc in next st, sc in the ch below the next st] across the handle, sl st in each st up to next handle, repeat as 1st handle, sl st in rest of the sts. Join and cut off yarn. 

Weave in all the loose ends.
