Shell stitch bag - free crochet pattern

 

Hi, I have a stylish market bag pattern for you today. This bag is sturdy and it has room to hold plenty of stuff inside. It would be a wonderful grocery bag that would definitely get you some compliments. 


Materials:

Medium worsted weight yarn approximately 300 meters

4.5 mm crochet hook

4 wooden rings of 2 inch diameter

Stitch markers

Measuring tape

Yarn needle

Size:

The bag is about 12 inches high excluding the straps and 14.5 inches wide

Stitches/Abbreviations Used:

** - Repeat instructions within asterisks as many times as directed

[ ] - Repeat instructions within parenthesis as a set as many times as directed

ch - chain

st/sts - stitch/stitches

sl st - slip stitch

sc - single crochet

dc - double crochet

Instruction

Base

Round 1: Ch 25, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in rest of chs except last, 5 sc in last ch, sc in next 22 ch on the other side, 4 sc in next ch. Join with a sl st to the 1st st.(54 sc)

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in 24 sts (place marker in the last st), 2 sc in next 3 sts, sc in next 24 sts (place marker in the 1st and 24th st), 2 sc in next 3 sts. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc. (60 sts)

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in each st up to the marker (24 sts), [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in each st from maker to next marker (24 sts), [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 3 times. Join. (66 sts)

Round 4: Ch 1, sc in each st up to the marker, [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts] 3 times, sc in each st from maker to marker, [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts] 3 times. Join. (72 sts)

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in each st up to the marker, [sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in each st from maker to marker, [sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times. Join. (78 sts)

Round 6: Ch 1, sc in each st up to the marker, [2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts] 3 times, sc in each st from maker to marker, [2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts] 3 times. Join. (84 sts)

Round 7: Ch 1, sc in each st up to the marker, [sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in each st from maker to marker, [sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times. Join. (90 sts)

Body

Round 8: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), 3 dc in same st, skip next 2 sts, sc in next st, skip next 2 sts, **[3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc] in next st, skip 2 sts, sc in next st, skip 2 sts** Repeat from ** to ** around. Finish the round with 2 dc in the 1st at the beginning of round. Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch.

Round 9: Sl st in ch-1 space, ch 1, sc in same space, [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in next sc, **sc in next ch-1 space, [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in next sc** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc.

Round 10: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), 3 dc in same st, sc in next ch-1 space, **[3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc] in next sc, sc in next ch-1 space** Repeat from ** to ** around. Finish the round with 2 dc in the 1st at the beginning of round. Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch.

Repeat rows 9 and 10 until the total height is about 12 inches.

Attaching rings to the bag

Join yarn into a ring, ch 1 and work 5 sc into each ring. Cut yarn off leaving a long tail to attach the rings to the bag.

Thread the free end of yarn through the yarn needle and sew the rings to the top of the bag about 3 inches away from the edges.

Straps 

Row 1: Join yarn to the top part of a ring, ch 1 and work 3 sc around the ring. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st. Turn.
Repeat row 2 until the length of the strap is about 15 inches. Work more rows if you want a longer strap. Join the end of the strap to the other ring on the same side by working 3 sc sts into the ring. Cut off yarn and weave in all the loose ends.
