Misty

It was Wednesday afternoon on the last day of January. We had a relative visiting us and were having fish for lunch. We heard a meow outside the door and when we opened the door we found this black stray kitty standing out demanding to be fed fish. We gave him a few pieces, shooed him away and shut the door. Later when my husband was going out he found the kitty sitting on the stairs and brought it in.

I don't know what he was thinking because we were against the idea of having pets at home, no, not because we don't like animals. Actually we all love animals and we even had some bunnies few years ago. So although my son keeps pestering us for a pet we always refused because we go on long vacation every year to visit our parents and having pets at home would make it difficult. Traveling long distances with pets is not an easy task and in our country traveling with a cat is almost impossible. Moreover my son used to have breathing troubles and he had some severe bouts of wheezing when we had the bunnies.
So I don't know what my husband was thinking when he let the kitty in. It was a she and was about 4 or 5 months old. She was very friendly, not at all scared and she appeared to be used to human company. I tried to let her out many times but she outright refused to get out of the door. That night she chose to sleep in a chair next to our bed. Again we tried to let her out the next day and again she refused. Later she did go out a few times but always returned.
We named her Misty. We didn't have the heart to chase her out but I was worried that the cat would trigger my son's breathing problem. We didn't know what to do with her. She wouldn't leave us and we couldn't keep her. In the meantime one week had passed and we were still clueless. We didn't know anyone who was willing to adopt her. So I listed her on a couple of pet adoption sites and few people contacted us and two of them even made us wait a few days saying that they would take her but finally did not. Now it was about 3 weeks since she came to us. She became very attached to me and used to follow me around  house, even into the bathroom. If I don't let her in, she would wait for me outside the door. So adorable! Though she had a few favorite spots for her daytime naps she always slept at our feet at night.
Finally at the beginning of this month a young woman contacted us. She was willing to take Misty and we also felt that she was the right person. So 5 days ago we gave her off with a heavy heart. I never thought I would miss her so much and I even cried for the next 3 days. I am so tempted to call the young lady and ask her to give Misty back. I feel guilty that I abandoned the poor kitty who chose us as her owners or rather chose to own us. The next day after giving her away I had a dream that Misty found her way back and she was purring beside me trying to wake me up. Misty had been with us for only a month but it's going to take me a long time to get over her absence and I don't think I'll ever forget her. I hope Misty is very happy in her new home.

Moving to crochet, I finished the crescent shawl that I started last year, of course, it wouldn't have been possible without Misty's help.

She even helped me block it. Pattern soon. Have a great day!

  3. She is adorable! I understand your reasons to not have pets, but it must have been very hard to let Misty go. I hope she will have a great life at her new home. Do you live nearby? Then she might come back to your house, one day...

    1. Even I thought so, it's takes about one and half hours by vehicle.

  4. You are a kind soul to open your heart to this little fur baby. She looks just like my feral cat, Cindy, who adopted our backyard 2 years ago and comes for her meals and sheltor on my back porch.
    Love the shawl!

  5. What a beautiful story... Misty reminds me of our little black cat Sammy. She came to us a few years ago and walked into our house and into our hearts as if she had been there forever. Because we already had some cats, I couldn't refuse her. It seems to me that black cats are often abandonned. I'm glad you found a good home for Misty and took care of her for a month. So sweet you miss her, some cats do have a personality and a wisdom that is very special. But let it be a comfort to know that you don't have to leave her behind when you go on holidays or so. It's better this way. Take care!
PS: Maybe you can visit Misty in her new house? When you can see for yourself that she is happy there, you might be more at peace with it?

    1. She is indeed a very special cat, she stole all our hearts. I texted the new owner to ask her about Misty. She replied that Misty spends the whole day eating and sleeping. I'm not sure if it's good or bad. It's only just about a week, so maybe it'll take her a few more days to adjust to her new home and return to her playful self.

  8. That's an amazing story! It's incredible what strong connection animals and humans can establish. And I totally feel your pain of having to give Misty away.
    Beautiful pictures!

  9. To me it sounds like she is depressed. Maybe you can go visit to help her transition. She picked you to be her fur ever home. 😢
