Messy bun hat - free pattern

Hey everybody, here is a free pattern for you today. I have been seeing messy bun hats or ponytail hats everywhere lately and decided to jump on the bandwagon though a little late. I know there are already plenty of patterns on the internet but I wanted to use this beautiful texture stitch and a ponytail hat seemed to be right choice to use it. So here is it.

Click here to favorite it or add it to your Ravelry project.

You will need bulky weight yarn and size J/6 mm and I/5.5 mm crochet hooks.
Skill level - Intermediate
Gauge - 10 sc = 4 inches with J/6.00 mm hook

Abbreviations used
ch - chain
sl st - slip stitch
sc - single crochet (UK - double crochet)
dc - double crochet (UK - treble)
fpdc - front post double crochet

Note:
  • The pattern is for an adult size hat.
  • The pattern is written using standard American terms.
  • The hat is worked top down.
  • Ch 1 at the beginning of each round will not be counted as a stitch.
  • Finish each round by joining the last st with a sl st to the 1st stitch.
  • Use J/6.00 mm crochet hook for the body and I/5.00 mm hook for the brim

Instruction:
Using J/6.00 mm crochet hook ch 24, join the last ch with a sl st to the 1st ch being careful not to twist the chains.
Round 1: Ch 1, dc in each ch around. Join (24 sts)
Round 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), dc in previous st (first cross stitch), **skip next st, dc in next st, ch 1, dc in the skipped st (forms cross stitch)** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch at the beginning of round (12 cross stitches)
Round 3: Ch , dc in same st, **skip next ch-1 space, fpdc in next dc, ch 1, dc in the skipped ch-1 space, dc in next dc** Repeat from ** to ** around finishing the round with a cross stitch. Join with a sl st to the 1st dc.
Round 4: Ch 1, **2 dc in next dc, skip next dc and ch-1 space, fpdc in next dc, ch 1, dc in the skipped dc** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the 1st dc.
Round 5: Ch 1, **dc in next 2 dc, skip next st and ch-1 space, fpdc in next st, ch 1, dc in the skipped st** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the 1st dc.
Round 6: Repeat round 5 until the hat measures about 6 inches high.

Brim (Change to I/5.5 mm crochet hook)
Round 1: Ch 1, [dc in 3 dc, dc in ch-1 space, dc in fpdc] around. Join with a sl st to the 1st dc.
Round 2: Ch 1, [fpdc in next st, dc in next st] around. Join.
Round 3: Ch 1, [fpdc in fpdc, dc in dc] around. Join.
Round 4: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join and fasten off. Weave in all the loose ends.

  5. In the very first round it says after the double crochets that there will be 25 stitches. Should this be 24? Otherwise when you go to do the first round of cross-stitches you have an empty Stitch.

  9. Hi! I'm a beginner crocheter, but your pattern is easy to follow! On round 3, how many chains should i make? It looks like you meant to insert a number...

    1. It should have been ch 1. Sorry about responding so late. Sometimes I don't get notification of the comments and I saw yours only by chance.
