Crochet snowflake - free pattern

The last time I shared a proper crochet tutorial with you was back on November 5, 2011. That was more than a year ago! I can't believe it! That was very lazy of me. Typically me! So here is one. This hexagon would make a lovely Christmas tree ornament.

To say the truth I didn't have any snowflake or hexagon in my mind while creating this. I was working on a flower for a flower scarf and surfing the net simultaneously. I went wrong somewhere and instead of a flower I ended up with a hexagon. Anyway it looked pretty, so I made a few changes here and there and made this lovely christmas tree ornament.

It measures about 5.5 x 5.5 inches. I used light worsted weight/DK yarn and a size H/5.00 mm hook. If you want a smaller hexagon you can replace the hook with a smaller one.

Abbreviations used:
ch - chain
sc - single crochet (UK - double crochet)
dc - double crochet (UK -  treble)
dc2tog - double crochet 2 stitches worked together
dc3tog - double crochet 3 stitches worked together
sl st - slip stitch
ch-sp - chain space

Using white ch 4 and join to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc2tog into ring, ch 2, (dc3tog, ch 2) 5 times into ring. Join with a sl st to the beg of round. Fasten off.

Round 2: Join red into any 2ch-sp. ch 3, dc, ch 2, dc2tog into same space, **ch 2 (dc2tog, ch 2, dc2tog) into next 2ch-sp** Rep from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the beginning of round.

Round 3: Sl st into next 2ch-sp, ch 3, dc, ch 5, dc2tog in same space, ch 3, **(dc2tog, ch 1, dc2tog) in next 2ch-sp, ch 3, (dc2tog, ch 5, dc2tog) in next 2ch-sp, ch 3** Rep from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the beginning of round.

Round 4: Ch 1, sc in same st, **(2 sc, ch 5, 2 sc) in next 5ch-sp, sc in next dc2tog, sc in next 3ch-sp, sc in next dc2tog, sc in 1ch-sp, sc in next dc2tog.** Rep from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the beginning of round.

Tie a ribbon to one corner and your Christmas tree ornament is ready.
