Crochet owl applique - free pattern

Hi everybody, I'm excited to share with you all a free pattern for this cute and colorful owl applique which you could use to embellish your kids' clothes, blankets, pillows, anything!

Materials

  • Fingering weight yarn (16 wpi) a small amount in a main color, white and two complimenting colors
  • Crochet hook size G/4.00 mm
  • Black embroider skein
  • Needle

Abbreviations/stitches used 

ch - chain
sl st - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet
dc - double crochet
sc2tog - single crochet worked together in 2 consecutive stitches (decrease)

Size

The finished owl measures approximately 2.75 x 3 inches

Note

The pattern is written in standard American terminology

Instruction

Work in continuous rounds without joining at the end of each round. Place a marker at the beginning of each round moving it up as you proceed.

Round 1: Using the main color ch 4, sc in 2nd and 3rd ch from hook, 3 sc in last ch, sc in next ch on the other side, 2 sc in next ch. (8 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next 3 sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next 2 sc (14 sc)
Round 3: 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat [sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc]  2 times, sc in next 2 sc, repeat [2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc] 2 times (20 sc)
Round 4: 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat [sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 2 times, sc in next 3 sc, repeat [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc] 2 times (26 sc)
Round 5: 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat [sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 2 times, sc in next 4 sc, repeat [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc] 2 times (32 sc)
Round 6: Sc in each sc around (32 sc). Continue working the ears.

Right ear

Row 1: Sc in next 4 sc. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog twice. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, ch 1, 3 sc along the side of the ear, sc in next 7 sc.

Left ear

Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog twice. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, ch 1, 3 sc along the side of the ear, sl st in next sc and fasten off.


Left wing

Join a new color in the st next to where you fastened off, ch 1, 2 hdc in next st, dc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in next st and cut off yarn.

Right wing

Skip next 8 sts, join yarn in the next st, ch 1, sc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, dc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, sl st in next st and cut off yarn.



Cut a few short strands of yarn measuring approximately 2 to 3 inches. Fold the strands in half. Using a larger hook pull the center of the yarns through the corner of the ear to form a loop, using the hook pull the free ends of the yarns through the loop and tighten the loop. Repeat for the other ear. Trim the edges.

Feet

Skip 2 sts from each wing, join yarn, ch 3, sl st in same st and cut off yarn.

Eyes (make 2)

Work in continuous rounds without joining at the end of each round.
Round 1: Using white ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around (12 sc)
Round 3: Sc in each st around (12 sc). Join with a sl st to the next st and fasten off.

Using black embroidery skein, embroider lashes on the eyes as shown.

Assembling

Weave in all the loose ends.
Sew the eyes.
Embroider beak and V on the body.
 Your applique is ready.

  1. Super cute. I recently made some little owl purses with a small box of colored pencils and notebook tucked in them. I gave them to the hospital where I volunteer and they were given as gifts to some of the pediatric patients. :)
